About our Area
Area I – A community shaped by the lake, the land, and the people.
From Youbou to Meade Creek and toward Bald Mountain, Area I is defined by natural beauty, strong local identity, and a deep connection to Cowichan Lake.
The heart of Area I
Cowichan Lake is at the heart of Area I—it’s part of how we live, how we connect, and what makes this place special.
We enjoy it all year long—boating, swimming, fishing—but it also plays a critical role. The lake supports the life cycle of our salmon and trout, and it’s on us to protect that.
People have lived in relationship with this lake for generations, including the Ts’uubaa-asatx First Nation, who continue that connection today.
Finding the right balance matters—respecting the lake for what it is, while still enjoying everything it offers.
Protecting the lake means protecting our way of life—now and for the future.
Built on connection
Our Community
Area I Youbou- Meade Creek is special not just for its natural beauty, but for the people who live here.
From the lakeshore to places like the Youbou Hall, pub, café, and community hall—it’s a community where people connect and show up.
Youbou’s roots as a forestry and mill town are still an important part of who we are. Long-time residents bring deep experience, while new families bring energy. Communities like Bald Mountain, Marble Bay, and Woodland Shores all play a role.
What holds it together are the people—volunteers, local groups, and the Youbou Volunteer Fire Department—who step up and keep this community strong.
A local economy rooted in place
Our Economy
Area I’s economy reflects who we are.
Tourism brings energy each summer—supporting local shops, restaurants, and jobs. Events at Laketown Ranch also create real opportunities and bring people into the region.
Forestry remains the backbone of this community—providing good jobs and supporting local families.
Looking ahead, we need to keep that strong foundation while creating room for new opportunities.
It’s about balance—supporting what’s already working, while building a stable future for our community.
