Recently I wrote to the Government of British Columbia to share concerns about proposed changes to the Property Tax Deferment Program and how they may negatively affect seniors in West Cowichan. Communities in our region have a higher proportion of seniors and lower average incomes than many parts of the province, meaning these changes could disproportionately impact aging residents. The letter highlights the importance of supporting aging in place and ensuring provincial programs reflect the realities faced by rural communities.
Our communities are strongest when seniors can remain in their homes and stay connected to the places and people they love. I will continue to speak up when policies risk making that harder for rural communities like West Cowichan.
As an Update to this correspondence – April 15 2026 MLA Debra Toporowski’s office responded
Good afternoon, Stephanie,
Thank you for sharing your letter regarding the recent changes to the BC Property Tax Deferment Program and the impacts on seniors in West Cowichan.
I appreciate the time and care you’ve taken to outline the realities facing residents in Electoral Areas I and F and the Town of Lake Cowichan. The context you’ve provided around demographics, rising property taxes, and limited housing options is incredibly helpful in understanding how these changes may affect rural communities.
I will ensure that your letter and the concerns you’ve raised are shared with MLA Toporowski. We are hearing from many constituents on this issue, and feedback like yours is important in helping inform those conversations.
Thank you as well for offering to speak further on this topic. If there are any updates or additional information we can share, we will be in touch.”
